Project Write Up
For this project I wanted to create a character based off an existing IP to see if I could replicate the style and workflow of the company. I ended up choosing the character Eklipse, which is an Overwatch fan character designed by Giulia Carli.
Technical Challenges
Refreshing myself on Marvelous Designer along with retopologizing those meshes once they are transferred over to Maya.
Researching how many polygons a typical Overwatch character has and resolution of the texture maps based off of data either given or ripped from the game.(note: I didn't rip the data, it's something made public and easily searchable) I kept the polygon count rather close, though I did opt to make 4K map for the main body since I figure Blizzard is updating their texture maps for Overwatch 2, other than that I gave her eyes and cornea their own 512 maps.
Creating Vectors for custom Alpha designs.
Converting VFX Particles into Objects for Marmoset Renders.
Artistic Challenges
Adapting from a more expressive sculpting style to a softer style.
Texturing a darker skinned character; I don't have much experience painting someone with a darker complexion, so It was an interesting experience doing so.
Overall Thoughts
I think I did a pretty good job overall, if I were to give myself more time I would probably modeled her weapons and probably redo her hair to fit the concept art more. Also I would have made a fake character select screen. Alas I've spent 1 1/2 months on this project already, so it's time to move on too new projects!
